The Fight-back of Robert Johnson and the Solution of Securus Technologies

Prison officials are the sections of people who face adverse job conditions in many cases as they are bound to receive the abuses of criminal gangs. As a keen observer of prison-related crimes, I have seen many cases of physical attacks towards the officials by the inmates, especially who are part of notorious criminal gangs. The fatal incident happened in the life of Robert Johnson is the most appropriate example that shows the extremity of such incidents. He was a correctional officer who worked at South Carolina-based jail called Lee Correctional Institution who was mainly assigned to confiscate contraband packages to the prison.

In 2010, he faced a deadly gun attack at his home by some intruders. The investigations showed that Johnson was attacked as he confiscated a contraband package that was deemed to a gang inside the prison just two weeks before the attack. The gang contacted their members outside the prison using contraband phones and asked them to attack Johnson. This showed the flaws of the prison system in blocking contraband phones. I can say that the incident also showcased the threats they create to the civil societies even while they are behind bars. Though Johnson received seven bullets in his body, he survived the battle and came back to life, quite painfully.

I have noticed that there were similar incidents in the past as well where either prison officials or their close relatives were targeted for strictly enforcing the prison protocols. All such attacks were carried out by contacting outside gang members through contraband phones. Once he got back to life, Johnson decided to fight against contraband phones. He campaigned throughout the country and pointed out the threats of uncontrolled use of mobile phones by inmates. Earlier this year, he even produced his validations in front of Federal Communications Commission to control those phones inside prisons.

Currently, Johnson is a paid consultant to the prison technology major, Securus Technologies. Interestingly, the incarceration solution provider has come up with a novel Wireless Containment System to manage and block unwanted calls efficiently. A spokesperson from Securus confirmed that the new system is working like installing a new network. The powerful system tracks all the phone calls, both incoming and outgoing, in the prison area and block calls from and to unknown/suspicious numbers. The firm confirmed that the system could restrict nearly 1.7 million unknown/suspicious calls in just eight prisons for a period of a year.

Eric Lefkofsky is Fighting Cancer Through Technology

Sometimes, when you are faced with an overwhelming problem with no easy solution, you have to be the one to find and fight for it. This is exactly what Eric Lefkofsky did when he created Tempus after his wife Liz was diagnosed with breast cancer. He was able to see first hand that the healthcare industry was woefully behind in technology compared to other industries despite electronic health records. This problem was not only frustrating, it was deadly. There needed to be a way to collect every last bit of data on a patient and their disease to streamline it into data that was not only accessible, but made sense.

Tempus doesn’t just aim to organize information, it wants to be able to mainstream the collection and use of the human genome by making it more affordable. Lefkofsky wants there to be less of a guessing game when it comes to finding the best medications and treatments for cancer and other daunting diseases. Tempus wants to create an operating system to manage and navigate disease treatment and the human body, this may seem like a lofty goal, but not an impossible one.

Eric Lefkofsky started with the humble beginnings of selling carpet at his alma mater, the University of Michigan, and has recently left his CEO position at Groupon (a company he co-founded) to focus on Tempus and philanthropy work. A video on Tempus’ website states, “We believe we can propel the next breakthrough in healthcare.” Lefkofsky thinks that out of all the changes big data and AI will make to the world, the impact on health technology will be one of the greatest and most rewarding.

In 2006, he and his wife established the Lefkofsky Family Foundation, a charitable organization that focuses on the community in Chicago and its surrounding areas. Eric Lefkofsky has given millions throughout the recent years to cancer research and treatment facilities, along with being a trustee for Lurie’s Children’s Hospital of Chicago. The Lefkofsky’s are so dedicated to their charitable work that they have become part of The Giving Pledge, a group of philanthropists that have pledged to donate at least half of their wealth during their lifetimes.

The gold star in employee stock options!

Employee benefits have become a very important topic for most corporations some businesses have stopped providing stock options for many reasons. Goldstein & Associates, LLC. and a mental health organization that he founded called The Fountain House. He has more than 15 years of experience in aiding corporations and clients with effectively streamlining compensation practices.

Business attorney’s like Mr. Goldstein encounter corporations wanting to axe stock options benefits to help the bottom line of the company’s finances. The corporations can benefit from the cut by cutting down on accounting errors that can result in increased financial obligations, and eliminating those tax expenses from being reported in case the stocks do become a burden.

Although, these stock options seem to be a possible burden for a corporation many can also see advantages from implementing these benefits. Corporations may see an increase in employee morale and have a sense of urgency in seeing the company’s success grow. Employees and corporations can find themselves in a win-win situation when they implement solutions known as a knockout. These types of stock options limits vesting requirements and employees will lose their share if the value falls under a certain amount, so the excessive cost that corporations found with share options are diminished from on-going expenses and employees see an incentive in having the stock options when they are growing.

Mr. Goldstein and his law firm specialize in advising compensation committees, CEO’s and management teams in executive compensation and aid in the awareness and the needs that benefit all parties involved.

Some critics say that Securus Technologies is unfairly targeting competition

Over the course of the previous few decades, the proliferation of illegal cell phones within the nation’s prison system has taken on urgent implications. The vast number of illegal cell phones that flood some of the nation’s carceral facilities threatens to undermine the institutional order and even creates serious problems for the public safety.

In response to the ever-increasing number of illegal cell phones in the nation’s prisons, Securus Technologies, one of the country’s leading providers of inmate communications services, has developed a system that allows corrections officers to both block unauthorized cell phone calls and to locate the devices within the facility.

But some people are questioning the motives of the company, stating that the only reason that Securus has developed the system is because illegal cell phones in prison interfere with their ability to profit from the phone banks that they run. However, nothing could be further from the truth.

Securus phone systems have state-of-the-art security features

The phone systems that Securus runs throughout many of the nation’s penal institutions have some of the most cutting-edge security features of any communications system in the world.

Typical phone banks, which often include Securus’ highly lauded video visitation platform, include sophisticated algorithms, backed by massive computing power, that allow for the constant monitoring of all calls taking place over the prison’s phone systems. The automatic monitoring system is able to parse the conversations taking place over every call, identifying any talk about criminal activity or any use of unusual words, such as code words, that may indicate some kind of criminal conspiracy is taking place.

The system is able to alert officers if a conversation exceeds a certain risk threshold. This not only frees up officers from the task of monitoring certain calls, it allows for every single communication taking place within the prison to be completely vetted, making the institution safer and all but eliminating the opportunity for inmates to engage in violations of the institutional rules or the to commit crimes.

However, when inmates have access to illegal cell phones, all of these security features can be bypassed. This puts the safety of the institution in jeopardy. But the most severe consequences have to do with the increased risk to the public at large.

Many case have been seen where prison gang leaders order the intimidation or even murder of witnesses in ongoing criminal investigations. This poses a severe risk to the integrity of the criminal justice system as a whole, as many of today’s criminal cases rely heavily on the testimony of witnesses.

For these reasons, Securus’ Wireless Containment System is doing much more than simply ensuring the profits of the prison and the phone operator. It is making prisons safer.

How Malcolm CasSelle Is Promoting the Growth of Markets for In-Game Asset Exchange

The creation of WAX (Worldwide Asset eXchange) has demonstrated to the tech world the power of companies and that of individuals to create tokens from in-game items. The creation of WAX’s platform has also availed a decentralized platform through which everyone can transact within the marketplace for exchanging virtual game assets.

WAX currently is reducing transaction costs while at the same time creating a marketplace that enables the transfer of assets for even games that didn’t have the functionality before. The ability to exchange in-game tokens is currently allowing the players to fractionalize their profits with other players.

It is worth noting that the tokenization of assets comes with its sets of challenges. The primary issue that has to be addressed within the Worldwide Asset eXchange is how to guarantee that all tokens traded within the market remain tied to their assets within the blockchain network.

To address this challenge, WAX has designed a multi-layered governance approach that can provide the clients using the platform with an oversight role. There are users within the marketplace who are responsible for transferring the tokens. These users are called Transfer Agents. Currently, the Transfer Agents have a supervisory committee referred to as Guilds.

In the governance of the Worldwide Assets eXchange, there are penalties imposed on Transfer Agents who do not carry on their mandate. The Penalties are enforced by the Guilds so that its reputation and that of the platform is upheld. The economic feedback imposed on the Worldwide Asset eXchange guarantees that items and tokens remain connected to their virtual assets.

The serving president at the Worldwide Asset eXchange is Malcolm CasSelle. He is also the current CIO at OPSKins. OPSKins is the world’s most trusted marketplace that enables players to trade on items from video games. Malcolm CasSelle has previously held other executive positions; he was the president of the Tribune Publishing previously known as Tronc.

Malcolm CasSelle has worked at SeaChange International; this is the same firm that acquired his company Timeline Labs. Malcolm was the CEO of Timeline Labs, a company that focused on analyzing engaging digital content.

What is the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund?

The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund was founded by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin with proceeds from a settlement of a lawsuit they filed against the County of Arizona for blatant abuse of their human rights and freedom of speech.

They are also the co-founders of Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media. The two committed the settlement money to fund migrant rights organizations throughout the state of Arizona.

Mr. Lacey and Mr. Larkin were arrested by Maricopa County Sherriff Joe Arpaio on October 18, 2007. They were taken from their homes in the middle of the night and jailed. This followed the journalists’ expose of the existence of grand jury proceedings seeking their notes on articles covering Sherriff Joe Arpaio.

Having spent the whole of their careers asserting and defending the First Amendment rights, Lacey and Larkin’s only recourse was to sue the County that ultimately prevailed in the United States Court of Appeals.

The court awarded the two a $3.75 million settlement which helped set up The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund.
