The Fight-back of Robert Johnson and the Solution of Securus Technologies

Prison officials are the sections of people who face adverse job conditions in many cases as they are bound to receive the abuses of criminal gangs. As a keen observer of prison-related crimes, I have seen many cases of physical attacks towards the officials by the inmates, especially who are part of notorious criminal gangs. The fatal incident happened in the life of Robert Johnson is the most appropriate example that shows the extremity of such incidents. He was a correctional officer who worked at South Carolina-based jail called Lee Correctional Institution who was mainly assigned to confiscate contraband packages to the prison.

In 2010, he faced a deadly gun attack at his home by some intruders. The investigations showed that Johnson was attacked as he confiscated a contraband package that was deemed to a gang inside the prison just two weeks before the attack. The gang contacted their members outside the prison using contraband phones and asked them to attack Johnson. This showed the flaws of the prison system in blocking contraband phones. I can say that the incident also showcased the threats they create to the civil societies even while they are behind bars. Though Johnson received seven bullets in his body, he survived the battle and came back to life, quite painfully.

I have noticed that there were similar incidents in the past as well where either prison officials or their close relatives were targeted for strictly enforcing the prison protocols. All such attacks were carried out by contacting outside gang members through contraband phones. Once he got back to life, Johnson decided to fight against contraband phones. He campaigned throughout the country and pointed out the threats of uncontrolled use of mobile phones by inmates. Earlier this year, he even produced his validations in front of Federal Communications Commission to control those phones inside prisons.

Currently, Johnson is a paid consultant to the prison technology major, Securus Technologies. Interestingly, the incarceration solution provider has come up with a novel Wireless Containment System to manage and block unwanted calls efficiently. A spokesperson from Securus confirmed that the new system is working like installing a new network. The powerful system tracks all the phone calls, both incoming and outgoing, in the prison area and block calls from and to unknown/suspicious numbers. The firm confirmed that the system could restrict nearly 1.7 million unknown/suspicious calls in just eight prisons for a period of a year.

Some critics say that Securus Technologies is unfairly targeting competition

Over the course of the previous few decades, the proliferation of illegal cell phones within the nation’s prison system has taken on urgent implications. The vast number of illegal cell phones that flood some of the nation’s carceral facilities threatens to undermine the institutional order and even creates serious problems for the public safety.

In response to the ever-increasing number of illegal cell phones in the nation’s prisons, Securus Technologies, one of the country’s leading providers of inmate communications services, has developed a system that allows corrections officers to both block unauthorized cell phone calls and to locate the devices within the facility.

But some people are questioning the motives of the company, stating that the only reason that Securus has developed the system is because illegal cell phones in prison interfere with their ability to profit from the phone banks that they run. However, nothing could be further from the truth.

Securus phone systems have state-of-the-art security features

The phone systems that Securus runs throughout many of the nation’s penal institutions have some of the most cutting-edge security features of any communications system in the world.

Typical phone banks, which often include Securus’ highly lauded video visitation platform, include sophisticated algorithms, backed by massive computing power, that allow for the constant monitoring of all calls taking place over the prison’s phone systems. The automatic monitoring system is able to parse the conversations taking place over every call, identifying any talk about criminal activity or any use of unusual words, such as code words, that may indicate some kind of criminal conspiracy is taking place.

The system is able to alert officers if a conversation exceeds a certain risk threshold. This not only frees up officers from the task of monitoring certain calls, it allows for every single communication taking place within the prison to be completely vetted, making the institution safer and all but eliminating the opportunity for inmates to engage in violations of the institutional rules or the to commit crimes.

However, when inmates have access to illegal cell phones, all of these security features can be bypassed. This puts the safety of the institution in jeopardy. But the most severe consequences have to do with the increased risk to the public at large.

Many case have been seen where prison gang leaders order the intimidation or even murder of witnesses in ongoing criminal investigations. This poses a severe risk to the integrity of the criminal justice system as a whole, as many of today’s criminal cases rely heavily on the testimony of witnesses.

For these reasons, Securus’ Wireless Containment System is doing much more than simply ensuring the profits of the prison and the phone operator. It is making prisons safer.

Securus and GTL Bake Off Challenge – Who’s Got My Call?

I’m just like everyone else. I like to know that my call gets to the right person at the right time for the right price. It’s not rocket science. It’s common sense.

The question is which one will give me all the above – Securus or GTL?

Securus CEO Richard A. Smith threw down the gauntlet and set the rules. Objecting to GTL’s claims of comparable features and services, Smith called for an independent judge to study both companies’ products and service capabilities. Smith emphasizes the competitive advantage of Securus’ investments. The company has spent $700 million in product development, technical platform improvements and company acquisitions. Securus established a modern Technology Center and US Customer Service Center.

Both Securus and GTL provide technology and call management solutions for use by civil and criminal justice institutions. Both provide essential services. This is product line versus product line. Which platform has the power, flexibility, technical smarts and overall economical value to take home the prize?

Smith is confident that he has the better system. Securus has conducted customer surveys among customers who have switched from GTL to Securus. The findings have revealed that Securus is preferred three to one. Those surveyed found Securus technology, value and customer service experience superior.

On paper, the two companies are comparable but platform performance and customer satisfaction may be the deciding factors for me. Let the bake off begin.
